Abstract

The present study was conducted with the aim of assessing the extent to which the ultimate educational aims of Islam are reflected in the content of the primary school textbooks Heavenly Gifts (Hedyehā-ye Āsemānī) and Qur’an Education (Āmūzesh-e Qurʾān) in the 2023–2024 academic year. The research employed a quantitative content analysis method. The statistical population comprised all lessons, verses, and activities of the aforementioned textbooks from grade two to grade six, and thus no sampling was required. The main research instrument was the “Checklist for Content Analysis of the Ultimate Educational Aims of Islam” (developed by Golpayegani and Davoudi Kalāyi), whose content validity and reliability were confirmed using Scott’s method (87.36%). The unit of analysis was “theme/content,” and the unit of context was “lesson.” Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal an uneven distribution in the coverage of the ultimate aims. In the Heavenly Gifts textbooks, the component of “purity and wholesome life (ṭahārah and ḥayāt ṭayyibah)” had the largest share from grades two to five, whereas only in grade six did the component of “guidance and growth” (41%) become dominant. Moreover, the component of “nearness to God and divine pleasure (qurb and riḍwān)” received the least attention across all grades. In the Qur’an Education textbooks, except for grade two, the component of “worship and servitude (‘ibādah and ‘ubūdiyyah)” showed the highest frequency, while the component of “taqwā (God‑wariness)” attracted the least attention in grades one to four. It is therefore concluded that, in the textbooks under study, the coverage of the ultimate educational aims of Islam lacks the necessary balance.
